Filing in context
The Frame is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 39 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 23 Honda notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 2,888 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 7 months.
Defect
The weld joining the side frame to the front lower cross member is improperly formed, resulting in insufficient weld strength. Continued use allows road vibration to detach the weld and displace the front lower cross member. In the worst case, the rear end of the lower arm that retains the front wheel may pull free, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the weld between the frame and the front lower cross member. Where the weld has detached, perform sheet metal repair. Where a crack is present at the weld, weld the cracked area. Where no detachment or cracking is found, add reinforcing rivets to the outer mating surface of the front lower cross member.
