Filing in context
The Axle is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 29 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 4,061 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 months.
Defect
On the rear axle, improper machining of the frame's axle support section prevents the bush from seating correctly, creating a gap between the frame and the axle mounting plate. Continued use causes the clamping torque on the fastening bolts to decrease, allowing the bolts to loosen and the plate to detach. In the worst case, the rear axle separates from the frame and the vehicle becomes inoperable.
Corrective action
Inspect all vehicles for the presence of a gap and verify bolt clamping torque at the affected section. Where a gap exists, insert the appropriate number of shims to eliminate it.
