Filing in context
The Other (Running Gear) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 86 Mitsubishi notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 3,100 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years.
Defect
Inadequate manufacturing process controls for the rear hub allowed foreign material to become embedded in the hub material during production, resulting in insufficient strength. Continued use allows vibration during driving to initiate a crack in the hub. In the worst case, the hub may fracture and the wheel may detach from the vehicle.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the rear hub with the corrected part and replace the surrounding components with new parts.
