Defect
On rear two-axle heavy trucks, the welding process for the rear trailing axle (non-drive axle) axle housing was improperly performed, resulting in vehicles assembled with defective axle housing welds. Continued use can cause cracks to develop at the weld. In the worst case, the axle housing can fracture, rendering the vehicle inoperable, or the brake drum can overheat and cause a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the weld on the affected axle housing. Any unit showing abnormalities must be replaced with a non-defective unit.
