Filing in context
The Axle is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 29 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 1,909 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 years and 10 months.
Defect
The front axle knuckle stopper area has insufficient strength. When excessive stress is generated at the kingpin boss during vehicle turns or similar maneuvers, cracks may develop at the stopper. Increased kingpin play accelerates crack progression. Continued use allows the cracks to advance until the boss fractures. In the worst case, the kingpin separates from the boss, causing the tire to lean and rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
Inspect the front axle on all vehicles and replace with a corrected part on any vehicle not already equipped with one. Additionally, establish a new wear limit for the front axle kingpin bore and add it to the service standards. Because full supply of corrected parts will take time, as an interim measure inspect the kingpin bore on all vehicles: replace immediately with a corrected part if cracks are found, or schedule replacement at a later date if no defects are present.
