Filing in context
The Starting System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 4,831 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles.
Defect
On large route buses, the flywheel ring gear hardness and the starter magnetic switch activation circuit wiring length are incorrect. During a start attempt, the starter pinion collides with the flywheel ring gear due to improper engagement, causing chipping and damage to the gear teeth. This makes engine starting difficult or impossible. If start attempts are repeated, the condition may, in the worst case, result in a vehicle fire. Note: This recall supplements notification no. 1222 (September 15, 2004), which contained errors in the affected vehicle selection; additional vehicles have been identified and are covered under this new filing.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the starter assembly with the corrected part (equipped with a starter relay) and install an additional delay relay. Inspect the flywheel ring gear tooth surface; replace with a new part if any abnormality is found.
