Filing in context

The Starting System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. Defect

① The key switch has inadequate water resistance, allowing water to intrude between the main power contact and the starter power contact inside the switch. This causes a leakage current that keeps the starter motor running continuously. In the worst case, the starter motor may overheat and burn out. ② The key switch mounting screws are insufficiently tightened, causing some key switches to loosen and fall out. When the key switch detaches, the main power terminals short circuit, burning the wire harness. In the worst case, the engine may shut down while driving and fail to restart.

Corrective action

① On all vehicles, install a rubber sheet on the key switch. ② On all vehicles, install a rubber sheet on the key switch and apply thread-locking adhesive to the key cylinder mounting screw threads.
