Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Turn Signal Lights as the affected component. This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 2,445 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 11 months.
Defect
On van-body vehicles fitted with auxiliary turn signal lights, the added electrical load exceeds the thermal capacity of the relay terminals inside the combination turn signal/hazard flasher unit. Prolonged hazard lamp operation causes the solder joints at those terminals to reach high temperatures, and repeated thermal expansion and contraction generates cracks in the solder. In the worst case, both the turn signals and hazard lamps may fail to illuminate.
Corrective action
Replace the flasher unit on all vehicles with a corrected part.
