Filing in context
The Steering linkage is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 22 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 3,859 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 6 months.
Defect
The mounting point of the slave lever bracket has insufficient strength, allowing repeated steering operations such as stationary turns to initiate a crack at that location. As the crack progresses, the slave lever mounting becomes insecure, causing the steering neutral position to shift and the vehicle to wander during straight-line travel. In the worst case, the lever may separate from the frame, resulting in loss of steering control.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, a reinforcing plate is added to the bracket mounting point. If a crack is found at the mounting point, weld repair is performed.
