Filing in context
The Steering linkage is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 22 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 1,744 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 years and 8 months.
Defect
Defective welds are present at the ball joint socket weld of the bell crank, allowing repeated steering operations such as stationary turns to initiate a crack at the weld. As the crack progresses, in the worst case the affected area may fracture, causing the ball joint socket to pull free and resulting in loss of steering control.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the bell crank is replaced with a corrected part. Because full supply of corrected parts requires time, an interim measure is implemented: the ball joint socket area is inspected, and any unit found to have a crack is immediately replaced with a corrected part, while units showing no defects are scheduled for corrected-part replacement at a later date.
