Filing in context
The Fuel tank is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 37 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 4,189 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 10 months.
Defect
On vehicles converted from a horizontally mounted fuel tank to a vertically mounted configuration, the mounting bolts securing the fuel tank brackets (tank support and tank support bracket) to the body have insufficient strength. Driving vibration and related stresses may cause these bolts to fracture. Continued operation allows the brackets to detach and, in the worst case, the fuel tank may separate from the vehicle.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the tank support, tank support bracket, and mounting bolts with corrected parts.
