Filing in context
The Fuel tank is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 37 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,239 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 3 months.
Defect
The fuel tank mounting brackets have inadequate dimensional accuracy, and the structure of the bolted joint between the tank and brackets, as well as the specified bolt torque values, are improper. Road vibration and similar inputs may cause the tank-to-bracket bolts or the bracket-to-frame bolts to loosen. Continued use may cause cracks to develop in the fuel tank, resulting in a fuel leak. Cracks may also develop in the mounting brackets and, in the worst case, a bracket may break and the fuel tank may detach.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the mounting brackets and fastening bolts with corrected/revised parts and apply the revised tightening torque. Replace the fuel tank with a new part at the same time.
