Filing in context
The Exhaust Emission Reduction Device is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 21 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Nissan notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 330 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 1 month.
Defect
The heat shield on the exhaust manifold is improperly shaped, exposing the oxygen sensor mounting area of the front catalytic converter to repeated thermal stress. This causes the mounting area to corrode and detach, generating abnormal noise. Continued use after detachment may allow the oxygen sensor to separate entirely, significantly increasing exhaust noise.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the exhaust manifold heat shield with the corrected part and inspect the condition of the oxygen sensor mounting area. If the mounting area has detached, replace the exhaust manifold-integrated front catalytic converter with the corrected part.
