Filing in context
The Blow-by system is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 4,109 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 4 months.
Defect
On vehicles converted to operate on both gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG), the low-pressure regulator that controls CNG pressure and flow contains a valve with excessively high rubber hardness and a valve seat machined to insufficient precision. As a result, the valve seal is inadequate and CNG leaks past it. During idling, the leaking CNG enriches the fuel mixture and causes rough engine operation. While the vehicle is parked, leaked CNG accumulates in the intake manifold; if the engine is restarted immediately after shutdown, a backfire may occur. In the worst case, the backfire can dislodge the intake blow-by hose, releasing blow-by gas into the atmosphere.
Corrective action
On all affected vehicles, replace the low-pressure regulator with the corrected part. Additionally, inspect the intake system; if damage is found, replace the damaged components with new parts.
