Defect

On vehicles fitted with a retrofit catalytic converter as a particulate matter reduction device, the joint connecting the exhaust pipe upstream of the catalyst to the catalyst body is improperly designed, and/or the exhaust pipe wall ahead of the main muffler is insufficiently thick. As a result, the exhaust pipe lacks adequate strength to withstand engine vibration during driving and may develop cracks. Continued use allows the crack to progress until the exhaust pipe fractures, causing increased noise.

Corrective action

On all affected vehicles, replace the complete exhaust system assembly with the corrected part.
