Filing in context
The Exhaust pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 32 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 4,359 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 9 months.
Defect
On vehicles fitted with a retrofit catalytic converter as a particulate matter reduction device, the joint connecting the exhaust pipe upstream of the catalyst to the catalyst body is improperly designed, and/or the exhaust pipe wall ahead of the main muffler is insufficiently thick. As a result, the exhaust pipe lacks adequate strength to withstand engine vibration during driving and may develop cracks. Continued use allows the crack to progress until the exhaust pipe fractures, causing increased noise.
Corrective action
On all affected vehicles, replace the complete exhaust system assembly with the corrected part.
