Filing in context
The Exhaust Pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,758 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 11 months.
Defect
On driver training vehicles equipped with a diesel engine and manual transmission, the front exhaust pipe design is inadequate. Engine vibration during stall events generates high stress at the bellows section of the pipe. Repeated stall events cause cracks to develop in the bellows, which may result in increased exhaust noise.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the front exhaust pipe. Where an uncorrected part is installed, replace it with the corrected part. (Because supply of the corrected part requires time, as an interim measure, all owners are to be notified of the defect, and front exhaust pipes are to be replaced with the corrected part on a sequential basis.)
