Filing in context
The Exhaust Pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 2,453 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 5 months.
Defect
The exhaust pipe is improperly secured. Engine vibration may cause cracks to develop in the exhaust pipe. Continued operation may result in noise levels exceeding the regulatory limit, or exhaust heat may melt the insulation on surrounding electrical wiring, causing a short circuit. In the worst case, the engine may become unable to restart. (Note: This issue was originally reported on October 20, 2004 under notification number "1276." Vehicles were omitted from the original scope, and the repair instructions issued at that time were inadequate. Additional corrective work is required; accordingly, the vehicle scope and remedy have been revised and resubmitted.)
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the exhaust pipe and muffler with corrected parts. Also replace the steering oil pipe and exhaust brake air pipe with revised parts featuring a modified routing, and inspect the area surrounding the exhaust pipe and muffler, correcting any interference with adjacent components. For vehicles on which work was previously completed under recall notification number "1276" dated October 20, 2004, inspect the steering oil pipe and exhaust brake air pipe and replace any that do not have the revised parts installed. Also inspect the area surrounding the exhaust pipe and muffler and correct any interference with adjacent components.
