Filing in context
The Fuel pump is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 37 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 838 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 9 months.
Issue
On the mechanical fuel injection pump of the diesel engine, inadequate assembly instructions at the parts manufacturer resulted in an incorrect spring being installed in the fuel supply valve. This causes the fuel supply start timing to differ from the specified value. As a result, black smoke emissions may increase in certain driving conditions. Additionally, because service instructions provided to dealers for these vehicles were inadequate, some vehicles received improper dealer servicing, leaving the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system in a non-standard condition.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the fuel injection pump. If an incorrect spring is found in the fuel supply valve, retrofit the fuel injection pump to the correct specification. In addition, inspect the EGR system on all vehicles and restore any unit found in a non-standard condition to the correct configuration with appropriate servicing.
