Filing in context
The Body is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 108 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 771 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 5 months.
Defect
The tailgate stopper mounting area has insufficient strength. The impact generated when the tailgate reaches full open can crack the mounting area. Repeated opening and closing of the tailgate allows the crack to propagate and, in the worst case, causes the mounting area to fracture, releasing the stopper and allowing the tailgate to drop from its fully open position.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the tailgate stopper mounting area. If cracks are present, reinforce the mounting area. Additionally, inspect the tailgate stopper and replace any unit not equipped with the corrected part designed to absorb the impact at full open. (Because supply of the corrected part requires time, all owners will be notified of the defect and cautioned on use; repair work will be performed at a later date.)
