Filing in context
The Fuel Tank is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 79 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 32 Mazda notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 777 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 11 months.
Defect
Insufficient clearance exists between the insulator fitted to the plastic fuel tank and the exhaust pipe. When the fuel tank expands, the insulator contacts the exhaust pipe and reaches elevated temperatures. Continued use in this condition may cause the fuel tank to melt and perforate, resulting in a fuel leak and, in the worst case, a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the plastic fuel tank and add glass wool between the fuel tank and the insulator. If the fuel tank shows signs of melting or the retainer has separated, replace the fuel tank with a new part.
