This filing is one of 32 Mazda notifications from 2004 in this archive. Defect
② Insufficient water protection for the battery allows rainwater and other moisture to reach the top of the battery. When the battery is replaced, the shape of the electrolyte filler port on some replacement batteries allows water to enter the battery, increasing the electrolyte volume. The overflowing electrolyte contacts the ABS hydraulic unit, causing it to corrode. In the worst case, brake fluid may leak from the corroded unit, reducing braking force.
Corrective action
② On all vehicles, confirm whether the battery has been replaced. If the battery has been replaced, inspect the battery and inspect the ABS hydraulic unit for corrosion; replace any corroded ABS hydraulic unit and brake pipes with new parts, and install a battery cover. If the battery has not been replaced, install a battery cover.
