Filing in context
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 32 Mazda notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 306 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 years and 2 months.
Defect
① The automatic tensioner that maintains timing belt tension has insufficient vibration-damping performance on some engines. Continued use causes the tensioner's external spring to fracture, allowing the timing belt to go slack and producing abnormal noise. In the worst case, fragments of the fractured spring may become jammed in the timing belt and cause the engine to stall. (Note: This notification covers vehicles on which an incorrect automatic tensioner was installed during corrective action performed under Recall Notification No. 537, dated October 1, 1998. Those vehicles are included in this recall.)
Corrective action
① On all vehicles, inspect the automatic tensioner and replace any affected unit with the corrected part.
