Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 32 Mazda notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 313 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 5 months.
Defect
The centralized ground joint connector located in the engine compartment — which provides grounding for the EGI main relay, fog lamps, and other lighting — has terminals with insufficient temperature tolerance. Heat generated during normal current flow can melt the terminals, causing a continuity failure that prevents proper grounding. As a result, activating the turn signals may cause the lighting system (turn signals, clearance lamps, etc.) and, on some vehicles, the wipers to malfunction. Additionally, activating the hazard warning lights or fog lamps, or on some vehicles operating the windshield washer, may cause the EGI main relay to malfunction and the engine to stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, remove the joint connector and reconnect the ground wires by direct connection.
