Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Steering fork as the affected component. This filing is one of 17 Honda notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 1,842 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 4 months.
Defect
The dimensional relationship between the handlebar holder and the handlebar post on the vehicle is inappropriate, leaving a gap at the handlebar holder seating surface. Vibration during vehicle operation causes one of the handlebar holder bolts to fracture. Continued use allows the remaining bolt to fracture as well, and in the worst case, the handlebar detaches from the vehicle.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the handlebar holder with a new part, add a washer at the holder mounting point, and secure with a new lock nut.
