Filing in context
The Speedometer is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 36 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 17 Honda notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 1,905 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 months.
Defect
The two capacitors installed on the digital speedometer control board—one for electrical noise suppression and one for monitoring the speed-display CPU operating circuit—are inappropriate for the application. First, as temperature near the speedometer rises, some units count electrical noise on the speed signal as an actual speed signal, causing the displayed speed to read higher than actual vehicle speed. Second, as temperature near the speedometer rises, some units reset the display signal from the speed-display CPU, causing portions of the digital readout to disappear.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the digital speedometer control board assembly with the corrected part.
