Filing in context
The Wiper is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 14 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 36 Mitsubishi notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 1,551 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 months.
Defect
The air vent on the wiper motor is incorrectly positioned. When large volumes of water enter the front deck area — such as during factory shower leak tests — the air vent may become submerged, allowing water to enter the motor interior. This causes internal rust and, in the worst case, a continuity fault that renders the wipers inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the wiper motor assembly with a corrected part.
