Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Isuzu & Nissan.
The Generator is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 15 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 Isuzu notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 3,109 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 3 months.
Defect
In high-specification ambulances and similar vehicles whose engine idle speed is set higher than standard, the diodes used in the onboard generator are rated below the required current capacity. During extended idle operation, the diodes overheat and sustain damage, allowing excessive current to flow. This causes further heat buildup that melts adjacent resin components and, in the worst case, may result in a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the generator with the corrected part. On vehicles where the replacement generator exceeds the existing wiring capacity, install supplemental electrical wiring.
