Filing in context
The Other systems is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 3 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Mazda notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 4,195 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 months.
Issue
The Smart Brake Support (SBS) control program in the vehicle control computer is incorrect. As a result, the system may fail to correctly recognize vehicles stopped on the shoulder of an S-curve or large road signs. This causes the system to issue an audible proximity warning and display a warning message on the instrument display despite no actual collision risk. In the worst case, the collision mitigation brake system activates, applying sudden braking.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the SBS control program in the vehicle control computer is reprogrammed with the corrected/updated software. On vehicles where the SBS activation setting specification changes as a result, the owner's manual is updated and the instrument cluster program is also reprogrammed at the same time.
