Filing in context
The Other equipment is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 44 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 19 Mazda notifications from 2019 in this archive. For scale, 1,112 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 months.
Issue
The Smart Brake Support (SBS) control software in the vehicle control computer is incorrect, causing the system to fail to properly recognize vehicles stopped on the shoulder of an S-curve or large road signs. As a result, the system may issue an obstacle proximity warning and display a warning message even when no collision risk exists. In the worst case, the collision mitigation brake system may activate, causing sudden braking.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, update the SBS control software in the vehicle control computer to the corrected program. On certain vehicles where the SBS activation setting specification changes, the owner's manual will also be revised and the instrument cluster software will be updated at the same time.
