Filing in context
The Engine assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 23 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 86 Mitsubishi notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 2,763 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 years and 7 months.
Issue
In the corrected parts supplied under Market Measure (Improvement Campaign No. 333), the taper cone that secures the crank pulley to the crankshaft was machined improperly, resulting in some taper cones with an excessive inner diameter. In addition, improper assembly instructions for the crank pulley allow it to be installed at an angle. These conditions create non-uniform engagement between the crank pulley and the taper cone, generating excessive stress in the crank pulley and causing cracks to develop. In the worst case, the crank pulley may fracture, causing the accessory belt to come off. Loss of the accessory belt may result in insufficient charging, rising coolant temperature, and increased steering effort.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the crank pulley and taper cone with corrected parts. On vehicles on which the corrective action under Improvement Campaign No. 333 has not yet been performed, also replace the damper, damper mounting bolts, and water pump assembly with corrected parts, and inspect the crankshaft; if damage is found, replace the crankshaft with a conforming part.
