Filing in context
The Engine assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 23 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 3,203 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 months.
Defect
An improper piston casting process allowed pistons with casting defects near the piston pin boss to be installed in the engine. Continued high-RPM operation causes a crack to develop at that location. In the worst case, the piston may fracture, causing the engine to stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the complete engine assembly with an engine assembled with conforming pistons.
