Filing in context

The Engine assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 23 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,990 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 months.

Defect

A machining defect during manufacture of the engine exhaust valve camshaft left damage at the oil-hole boss (projection). Continued operation with this condition may, in the worst case, cause the exhaust valve camshaft to fracture, preventing the exhaust valves from opening and closing, stalling the engine, and making it impossible to restart. (Note: This notification adds newly identified subject vehicles to the recall filed on February 4, 1993, as Notification 408.)

Corrective action

Inspect the exhaust valve camshaft on all vehicles and replace it with the corrected part if an uncorrected unit is installed. Because supply of corrected parts requires additional time, as an interim measure all owners will be notified of the defect and camshafts will be replaced with corrected parts on a rolling basis.
