Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Body is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 108 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 648 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 11 months.
Issue
An improper manufacturing process for the balancer fitted to the flip-up back door allows residual cleaning fluid to remain inside the damper case. This fluid causes the O-ring to swell, reducing damping force and increasing the back door's opening speed, which may result in the door striking a person. Additionally, the rapid opening may cause the back door to oscillate up and down. In the worst case, continued use under these conditions can cause the balancer mounting point to break, allowing the back door to drop and strike a person.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the back door balancer is replaced with a corrected part. The back door is also inspected; any door found to have a crack is replaced with a new unit.
