Filing in context
The Turbocharger is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 30 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 30 Mitsubishi notifications from 2000 in this archive. For scale, 2,649 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 3 months.
Issue
The variable-nozzle turbocharger compressor wheel has an incorrect blade profile. When the turbocharger is operated continuously near maximum speed, this defect causes partial blade damage, resulting in abnormal noise and white smoke. In the worst case, engine output decreases.
Corrective action
Because corrected/revised parts are not yet available, all vehicles will receive an interim measure: inspect the turbocharger compressor blades and replace any damaged blades with known-good parts. Once corrected/revised parts become available, the blades will be replaced with the corrected/revised parts.
