Defect

The ignition switch circuit in the engine starting system is improperly designed. When the ignition key is held in the start position for an extended period—such as when the engine is slow to start—excessive current flows through the switch, causing internal heat buildup that melts the resin components. In the worst case, a short circuit may occur, resulting in a vehicle fire.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, a new relay will be installed to control the starter. Any ignition switch found to be damaged will be replaced with a new unit.
