Filing in context

The Computer (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 41 Mitsubishi notifications from 2024 in this archive. For scale, 2,495 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 8 months.

Defect

Due to insufficient consideration during design of the engine ECU on large-route buses, the following two defects may occur. (1) If the pinion gear and ring gear fail to mesh properly during starter operation, current continues to flow through the coil side to drive the motor without passing through the main switch contacts. This causes the coil to sustain heat damage. In the worst case, the starter becomes inoperable and the engine cannot be started. (2) The ECU may falsely detect DPF clogging or reduced oxidation catalyst efficiency. When this occurs, engine output is restricted, a DPF regeneration failure warning is displayed, and the engine warning lamp illuminates at the next engine start.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, reprogram the engine ECU software to the corrected/updated software.
