Defect
An improper bearing assembly jig used during drive motor production damaged the oil seal O-ring on some units at the time of assembly. In service, cooling oil leaks from the affected area into the drive motor, causing insulation resistance to drop. In the worst case, drive motor output may shut down, leaving the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the drive motor with a conforming part. On 4WD vehicles, replace the rear drive motor.
