Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Nissan & Suzuki.
The Alternator is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 13 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 21 Nissan notifications from 2023 in this archive. For scale, 772 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 6 months.
Defect
On vehicles without an idling stop function, the grease sealed inside the one-way clutch mechanism of the alternator pulley has insufficient heat resistance. During service, the grease degrades from heat, causing the one-way clutch to wear and fracture. This produces abnormal noise and illuminates the charge warning light. Continued use may cause the pulley to spin freely, resulting in insufficient charging and engine stall. Additionally, if the freewheeling pulley reaches high temperature from frictional heat and separates from the shaft, it may fall into the engine compartment and contact flammable materials nearby. In the worst case, this may result in a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
Replace the alternator with a corrected part on all vehicles.
