Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 21 Nissan notifications from 2023 in this archive. For scale, 380 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 7 months.
Defect
Insufficient verification during development resulted in improper routing of the engine compartment wiring harness. When the tip of a bolt used to secure the engine control unit aligns with a slit in the harness protective sleeve, the bolt tip may penetrate the sleeve and contact the wiring inside directly. Continued operation causes the wire insulation to wear through at the contact point, allowing the bolt tip to touch the conductor and create a short circuit. In the worst case, the drive motor may stop while the vehicle is in motion, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, install a resin cap on the tip of the engine control unit mounting bolt. If the harness insulation is found to be damaged, repair it.
