Filing in context
The Turn Signal Indicator is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 7 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 29 Mitsubishi notifications from 2023 in this archive. For scale, 1,709 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 15 years and 7 months.
Defect
(1) When the Safety Standards for Road Vehicles were revised, the turn signal indicator unit was incorrectly designed, leaving it without the function to warn the driver when the turn signal develops a broken wire or other fault. As a result, the driver may continue operating the vehicle without recognizing that the turn signal has failed. (2) When the Safety Standards for Road Vehicles were revised, the turn signal indicator unit required a design change; however, production continued without making that change. Consequently, the unit lacks the function to warn the driver of a turn signal fault such as a broken wire, and the driver may continue operating the vehicle without recognizing the failure.
Corrective action
(1) On all affected vehicles, replace the turn signal unit to restore the required warning function. (2) On all affected vehicles, add a turn signal unit and harness to restore the required warning function.
