Defect

On engines used in light-duty trucks, the clearance between the vacuum pump coupling and the camshaft may be excessive. Continued operation causes abnormal wear at the coupling-to-camshaft mating surfaces, leading to coupling damage and vacuum pump malfunction; the brake warning lamp and vacuum warning lamp illuminate, and clutch and brake pedal effort increases. Additionally, fracture of the cam rotor and phase deviation in the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) mechanism cause poor engine starting and, in the worst case, engine stall.

Corrective action

Replace the vacuum pump coupling on all vehicles with a corrected part. Inspect the camshaft mating surface; if wear exceeds the specified value, replace the camshaft with a new unit.
