Filing in context
The Lubrication System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 8 Honda notifications from 2022 in this archive. For scale, 2,580 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 7 months.
Defect
In the engine, inadequate heat shielding for the resin hose section of the oil cooler outlet pipe may allow radiant heat from the exhaust pipe to melt the hose surface when the vehicle follows closely behind a large vehicle while operating in first gear at high engine speeds. Continued use can cause the hose to crack and leak engine oil. The leaking oil may contact the exhaust pipe and produce smoke. In the worst case, oil reaching the rear tires may cause the vehicle to fall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, install an additional heat shield and replace the oil cooler outlet pipe with a new unit. Because the supply of remedy parts requires additional time, owners will be notified of the defect and advised of precautions regarding first-gear operation. Parts will be replaced as soon as they become available.
