Filing in context
The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Honda notifications from 2021 in this archive. For scale, 530 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 3 months.
Defect
On continuously variable transmissions (CVT), the hydraulic control software is incorrectly calibrated. Repeatedly opening and closing the accelerator at a steady vehicle speed may cause the metal drive belt to develop a crack and fracture. Continued operation after fracture results in poor acceleration and launch performance and, in the worst case, may render the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the CVT for metal belt fragments. If fragments are found, replace the CVT with a good unit and reprogram the CVT hydraulic control software with the corrected program. If no fragments are found, reprogram the CVT hydraulic control software with the corrected program and install an updated fault detection program. If, after the update, the shift position indicator light flashes and the defect is confirmed, the CVT will be replaced at no charge.
