Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Headlamp is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Mazda notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 139 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 8 months.
Defect
On discharge (HID) headlamps, inadequate manufacturing process controls have left volatile silicone compounds residue inside the headlamp socket packing on some units. Heat generated when the lamp operates volatilizes the residue, which then deposits on the contact points between the HID bulb and socket. Arc discharge heat at the contact points converts the silicone compound into silicon oxide, an insulating material, causing contact failure and preventing the headlamp from illuminating.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the headlamp socket with a conforming part and replace the HID bulb with a new one.
