Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Engine (General) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 48 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 21 Mazda notifications from 2021 in this archive. For scale, 270 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 8 months.
Defect
On the R06A engine, saltwater entering through the front grille reaches the oil control valve that governs operation of the exhaust-side hydraulic VVT (Variable Valve Timing mechanism), causing internal rust that prevents the valve from operating. This results in loss of VVT control, illumination of the engine warning light, and may cause the engine to stall immediately before the vehicle comes to a stop.
Corrective action
Replace the exhaust-side oil control valve with the corrected part on all vehicles.
