Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 3 manufacturers: Mazda, Nissan & Suzuki.
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Spring/Air Suspension as the affected component. This filing is one of 22 Mazda notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 59 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 8 months.
Defect
On the front suspension coil springs, insufficient adhesion between the paint coating and the spring steel causes the coating to peel when sand or small stones become trapped against the spring surface, allowing corrosion to advance at an accelerated rate. Continued use may cause the coil spring to fracture. In the worst case, the fractured spring may contact the tire, causing a puncture and rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the front coil spring with a corrected part.
