Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 3 manufacturers: Mazda, Nissan & Suzuki.
The Engine (general) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 12 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Mazda notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 24 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 6 months.
Defect
On Ene Charge-equipped vehicles, the crank pulley bolt has an improperly shaped thread root, resulting in insufficient durability. When clamping axial force is low, the crank pulley bolt may fracture, introducing play that prevents accurate detection of crankshaft phase angle. This causes a loss of proper engine control and may result in engine stall.
Corrective action
Replace the crank pulley bolt with a conforming unit on all vehicles. If the pulley or other related components show damage, replace those damaged parts with new units before installing the conforming crank pulley bolt.
