Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Fan belt / accessory drive belt as the affected component. This filing is one of 19 Mazda notifications from 2019 in this archive. For scale, 1,809 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.
Defect
The engine accessory belt is improperly designed, resulting in insufficient durability on affected units. Belt resonance during operation can cause the belt to fracture, stopping the alternator and water belt and illuminating the warning light. In the worst case, the engine stalls while driving and cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the engine accessory belt with a corrected part.
