Defect
On light-duty trucks, the insulation inspection method used during the starter manufacturing process is improper. As a result, units with inadequate insulation at the brush holder may have been released. When the starter is operated, these units may emit smoke.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the starter with a non-defective unit.
