Filing in context
The Fuel Gauge is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 26 Nissan notifications from 2019 in this archive. For scale, 558 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 3 months.
Defect
In the combination meter, an improperly designed fuel gauge circuit allows heat generated by resistive elements in the circuit and by the instrument illumination to repeatedly thermally expand the circuit board. This thermal cycling can cause a broken wire in the circuit, causing the fuel gauge to read artificially high. The driver may not recognize that the fuel has been exhausted and, in the worst case, the engine may stall while driving and fail to restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add a supplementary circuit to the fuel gauge circuit or replace the entire meter assembly.
